about

I think of this work as situational--in another era, I like to think I would have been a Situationist. By insinuating structures into a found scenario, I establish new relationships among strangers and neighbors in everyday places. A forgotten vest pocket park dreams of becoming a grand civic square with a fantastic watering system. The nomadic tent doling out free hot chocolate on a winter day received an initially guarded welcome perhaps because its appearance was hard to categorize within routine life. These constructions are aberrations, as acts that are unexpected. generous yes, but also sweetly subversive. Their entry onto the scene is both functional and festive. If all goes well, they could transform a part of everyday life.

history

An independent inquiry into the structures of daily life, everyday places began on the streets of New York in 1994 with a private office space for a public telephone, and has since acted out in small places from rural New York to fishing villages in North Holland, and big places from Amsterdam, and Paris, to Tokyo, and Kyoto.

Everyday Places is interested in looking at places and seeing what makes them the way they are, and what they could be. Always looking for groups or individuals with scenarios to contrive, places to act.
